The Sculpture 3, 2005-2015 ©Artist

Can you please tell us a few basic details about yourself?

I’m a so-called asphalt kid born in 1974, raised in a middle-class family and the son of the generation who led the economic growth after the Korean War.

Can you tell us your educational background and experience?

I studied sculpture both in an arts high school and as an undergraduate in Seoul. I don’t have amazing experience.

What is the concept of your artwork and design?

Something about the arts and the world.

Do you have a theme for all of your art work and design?

My works mostly deal with the arts itself and also of this world.

Is there anyone inspires you to be a sculptor?

Mystery novels? Haruki Murakami’s literature?  Korean painter Kim, Hong-ju? Various religious cults like Scientology, Unification Church and mystery dramas such as the “X-files”? Astrology and the cosmic world and of its fortunes? I get inspired by specific space or goods, but many times, my works are carried out on a repulsion.

How do you get your inspiration for your designs?

My inspirations are mostly from images from advertisements, ancient arts, magazines and TV news.

Look through your website, I see lots of photographs makes into a 3-D shape objects, can you tell us about your art works? Or does it have a meaning or message you want to carry out?

One of my goals is not to have a specific massage.

How long have you been as a sculptor? And how many art works do you have so far?

This is my ninth year since I first debuted as an artist, and I began to study art when I was fourteen. I haven’t counted the exact number of my works.

Is it you prefer people call you a sculptor as well as photographer, why?

I’m more attracted to being called of a sculptor, or actually, a contemporary artist.

What is photographic sculptor?

I’m just a sculptor as well as an artist. Is there such word as a “photographic sculptor”?

What did you focus on when you designing your photographic sculpture? And where did your ideas come from?

My main focus is on how many different ways my work can be interpreted. I want to leave a lot of empty spaces. I want to make a road that separates into several branches, almost like an interchange.

Can you tell us more about ‘Deodorant Type’, ‘The Flat’ and ‘The Sculpture’? What is the main difference between 3 of them?

‘Deodorant Type’ was made into a light sculpture (physically and psychologically) because I didn’t like the heaviness of traditional sculpture. Then I wanted to make a sculpture that is simple yet with a plausible exterior so ‘The Flat’ was created, which is an example of a type of contemporary still-life sculpture.  Later, ‘The Sculpture’ was made because just as a painter paints using oil paints, I was inspired to make a contemporary sculpture using traditional and academic methods without any special materials or methods.

Can you tell us about the connections between your series?

All of them are stories of sculptures and also a performance to become a sculptor.

Is there any difficulties on making a photographic sculpture?

That it’s very time-consuming? That’s about all.

What is your idea for your next work?

I want to make work that’s fucking shit.

Besides sculpting, are you interested in doing more different kind of designs?

I’m interested in the mechanics, and I am interested in observing different kinds of designs, but other than designs for functional purposes, I’m not too interested in fancy designs.

Is there any of your works you love the most? And why?

I think I’m basically very satisfied with all my works.

Final question… do you have a art work which is most represent yourself and your feeling?

All of my works would have to be combined to grasp my thoughts…or not?
