TYPE presents 《Sequence of Sculpture》, a collaborative exhibition by May Design Co., Ltd., One Ordinary Mansion, and Gwon Osang, on view from August 26 to September 25.

《Sequence of Sculpture》 is an exhibition that unfolds the various layers of Gwon Osang’s ‘photo-sculpture,’ a motif that has remained central to his practice, through the language of sculpture by composing a series of distinct scenes that transition into one another as a continuous “sequence,” much like a single unfolding event.

Gwon Osang has consistently explored the language of sculpture, and in this exhibition presents series that redefine the category of sculpture itself, alongside works that depart from the inherent functions of objects to create new structural masses.

‘Reclining Figure’ originated from the artist’s interest in abstract form and his study of the reclining figure, a significant motif in modern sculpture. This series was particularly influenced by the forms and sculptural language of the British sculptor Henry Moore. Beyond highlighting Gwon’s method of searching for specific individuals and collecting their images to construct abstract forms, the series reveals his distinctive approach to metaphorically organizing a greater volume of visual information than in his previous works.

The exhibition space has been newly configured through a collaboration between May Design and Gwon Osang. The underground gallery employs a monumental pedestal positioned at the center of the space, together with carefully orchestrated lighting, allowing the works to be viewed from all four sides. This arrangement creates a “Scene” in which visitors can focus entirely on the sculptures. A three-tiered staircase naturally directs the viewer’s gaze downward toward the central stage, functioning simultaneously as a viewing platform.

The exhibition also introduces the artist’s ‘Head’ and ‘Furniture’ series, as well as photographic sculptures that reinterpret vintage products by mid-century designers from One Ordinary Mansion. Following the circulation path naturally formed by the low pedestals and glass walls, visitors encounter a “Scene” that appears to invert the conventional setting of a fashion show. The artworks are positioned along the audience’s route, creating the impression that visitors themselves are standing at the center of the stage. Through this experience, one can glimpse May Design’s experimental approach to proposing new modes of exhibition viewing and spatial composition.

Within an imagined sculpture studio jointly created by May Design, One Ordinary Mansion, and the artist, fragments of a new lifestyle are assembled into a single “Scene.” Through distinctive furniture pieces, the installation creates a new spatial experience while proposing diverse ways of engaging with and consuming the values of everyday life, accompanied by Gwon Osang’s ‘Relief’ series occupying one side of the space.

This exhibition redefines the artist’s multifaceted perspective, which originates from the medium of sculpture. Beginning with photographic sculpture, Gwon Osang has continuously pursued collaborations across diverse disciplines. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will encounter both his efforts to forge new combinations between different genres and his enduring commitment to rediscovering the aesthetic possibilities inherent in sculpture.
